HOSPITAL ACQUIRED INFECTIONS -

Being an informed consumer is the ‘only’ way to protect yourself from mistakes or errors that are made in the healthcare facilities that you will have contact with..........(hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices, laboratories, nursing homes, dentist’s offices, xray departments, nursing homes and any other place where you will receive patient care.)

Change the ‘no no’ to the ‘know know’ The more you know, the better off you will be and you can then say to the healthcare professional taking care of you ‘no no’ that is not how it is suppose to be done.

Healthcare personnel need to be educated on how to prevent infections. Now, one would say, "Isn’t that part of their training?" Well, you would think it would be, wouldn’t you? However, with the rate of infections seen in healthcare facilities, we know something is not right. Which leads to, "What is wrong with this picture?" The wrong part of the picture needs to be corrected. This part is obvious. What is it? Healthcare professionals need to be educated more and more. Ongoing education with oversight (directly.) A healthcare facility can have all the paperwork in place, however, if the staff are not carrying out appropriate infection control techniques, what good is it.

Surely, anyone reading this would wonder and think that the healthcare professionals should already know this information. Certainly they do, on some level. As years have progressed, with more strains of bacteria, more resistant to antibiotics, there is more severity around the issues of hospital acquired infections. All the more reason for healthcare personnel to be even more cautious.

If consumers, who might be patients one day, have a knowledge of what should or should not be happening, then perhaps consumers can remain infection free when entering a healthcare facility.
